Water Rails
The decision to make a first visit to the Sussex Wildlife Trust Woods Mill nature reserve proved to be the correct choice right at the end of the day. This reserve is the headquarters of Sussex Wildlife Trust and has coppice woodland, meadows and a pond.
There was very little wildlife to be seen on the walk around the reserve, the occasional butterfly on the wing, a lone Little Grebe and a family of Coots on the pond, and considering the habitat it was somewhat surprising to find no dragonflies (only spotted a solitary blue damsel).
However, luck changed whilst crossing the bridge back to the car park, not only my first sighting of a Water Rail (Rallus aquaticus) but a pair of Adults with a couple of young.
