Red Grouse, Whitaside Moor in the Yorkshire Dales
We first spotted Red Grouse (Lagopus lagopus) on a wall beside the road close to Whitaside Moor on the drive to Aysgarth Falls and then again on a walk that started and ended at our accomodation. This prompted a visit to Whitaside Moor on another day, and this time I went armed with the right lens for the subject, the Sigma 50-500 lens.
Thankfully it proved to be a very successful day, even with having to walk back to the car to avoid heavy showers on a couple occcasions, which entailed walking back down the hill you had just walked up.
The Red Grouse even had the courtesy of lending a hand in finding them, as they had a habitat of announcing their location with a very distinctive call sounding very much like “goback, goback, goback”.
These are the best shots of the Red Grouse from the day, plus at the end of the post a pano view of the surrounding Swaledale.
