The walk to the Red Tarn & Helvellyn

The next adventure in the Lake District was a walk from Glenridding, situated alongside Ullswater, to view the Red Tarn and Hellvellyn.

Our route was a steady climb up Grisedale Brow that runs alongside Grisedale valley, and towards some very ominous looking dark clouds.

The weather conditions in the opposite direction were a complete contrast offering excellent views of Arnison Crag, Place Fell and The Nab in the very far distance.

As you may have gathered from the increasing in height from where these photo’s had been taken, the ominous dark clouds hadn’t put us off.

The incline steadily increases as you get closer to the Hole-in-the-wall, though after a lot of huff and puff we eventually made it, and as you can see the hole in the wall is aptly named.

We decided to give the walk around Helvellyn a miss due to the cloud cover, and instead took the path directly towards the Red Tarn.

Once the goal had been achieved all that was left to do was return back to Glenridding, taking an alternative route back descending down Birkhouse Moor.

The descent was on a good twisting track across a couple of bridges over Glenridding beck to Glenridding itself.
