Great Wood to Walla Cragg
The daily hiking continued, this time a circular walk from Great Wood car park to Walla Cragg in very changeable weather conditions. Water proof gear was a must!
The trail briefly took us across the road away from the car park to walk along the shoreline of Derwentwater, and timed for a short break in the rain for this quick snap.
After a short distance the path returned us back across the road, through a hole in the wall and to a trail upwards which quickly levelled out to walk below the Craggs towards Ashness Bridge.
Ashness Bridge is a popular location for photographers as it can offer up a scenic shot with Skiddaw in the background on a decent day. Our arrival coincided with heavy rain and limited visibility so no photo this time.
Our route then took us slightly back on ourselves and to a steep incline path up to Castlerigg Fell and towards the summit of Walla Cragg.
The rain abaited by the time the path began to level out, though the dark clouds continued to stream by. At one stage a beam of sunlight broke through shining on Grange village making for this dramatic photo.
On arrival at the gate to Walla Cragg summit we looked back and noticed another walker standing on mound, and so we decided to take a diversion to see what the view was like before going on to Walla Cragg summit
The mound (on the right of the immediate picture above) I believe from looking at the map is called Brown Knotts and this is the view looking across Derwentwater to Catbells with Keswick and Skiddaw to the right.
Here looking towards Walla Cragg with Bassenthwaite Lake and Skiddaw in the background.
We then walked back to Walla Cragg summit before returning to Great Wood car park via Castlerigg. Here are the scenic views from Walla Cragg.
