Scafell Pike
The last Lake District hike of this autumn was to the summit of England’s highest mountain, Scafell Pike. Our route followed the 3 peaks challenge path which started from a car park just outside of Wasdale village and led us on a steady incline alongside Lingmell Gill, which was in full flow due to the heavy rainfall the previous day.
You do have to cross Lingmell Gill close to the waterfall and Brown Tongue. It took us a short time to find a reasonably dry and easy crossing point due to the strong waterflow.
Once across, there is a much steeper gradient to get to Hollow Stones. Here Scafell Pike (on the left) and Scafell (on the right) dominate the cloudy skyline.
This is looking back towards Wastwater Lake from Hollow Stones.
Further on the path takes you past Lingmell and to a rocky path to Scafell Pike summit. Here is the view of Lingmell and Round How a little way up the rocky path.
The weather improved as we climbed higher, and so it was clear by the time we reached the summit.
Here are the panoramic scenes to be had in all directions
After admiring the stunning vista’s we returned by the same route stopping by Hollow Stones again, where there was a clearer view of Scafell Pike and Scafell this time around.
Upon return we then took the opportunity to drive to the other end of Wastwater Lake to take in the scene looking towards the mountains of Yewbarrow, Great Gable, and Lingmell.
