Snowdrops & a couple of tiny critters

Now that snowdrops (Galanthus) are out a return to Garston Wood and to a known patch was called for at the weekend. I used both the Olympus OM4ti film camera (slide shots to be shown later once the roll has been developed and scanned) and also my digital SLR the Olympus OM-D EM-5 on this photo shoot. In addition for the digital photo’s I used a selection of colour cards placing them in the background.

Here with a single snowdrop

Once I finished shooting the snowdrops I decided to have a root around in the leaf litter and under dead branches in the search for tiny critters. I found this linear Springtail (Entomobrya nivalis). Due to their tiny size, approx 1-3mm in length and I had to use my Zuiko Olympus 38mm Macro F2.8 lens on the auto-extension tubes providing a magnification range of 3x-5x, along with twin macro flashes and wide angle diffusers.

The viewfinder in the Olympus OM-D EM-5 is quite dark with this set up, so next time I am thinking of taking a torch to light up the subject easier.

This is at approx 3x

The other critter found was this  Harvestman spider (Opiliones). This is at approx 4x

Thanks for showing us the snowdrops. It is very cold and bleak here in the US midwest with temperatures far below zero and no sign of plant or insect life outside. Plenty of opportunities for snow shots, though.

Hi Chris, glad you enjoyed the snowdrop shots and spring here is not too far around the corner now. You certainly have had some snow looking at your shots. Hope your weather improves soon.

  • All very nice. Like the use of the colour with the snowdrops. The springtail is immense.
