Skomer Island
This 2nd post about Skomer Island features landscape photo’s of the island, it’s surrounding coastline, and photo’s of the varied birdlife that you may see.
The weather report for the day was mixed, and due to the sun breaking through the cloud as we arrived at North Haven landing place it made sense to head over to The Wick to see the Puffins first of all.
The path through South Stream Valley and Welsh Way to The Wick provides excellent views of Driftwood Bay and The Neck.
You may see Puffins standing by or on the rocks along Welsh Way.
The Welsh Way path takes you past High Cliff and onto The Wick.
The Puffins are not hard to find at The Wick due to the fact that their burrows honeycombe the ground right beside the paths.
You can see more photo’s of these characterful birds in my first Skomer Island Puffins post.
There were also Guillemots (Uria aalge) at the Wick lower down the cliff face.
We then followed the path to take us to Garland Stone, which takes you past Gorse Hill, Tom’s House and Pigstone Bay
Gorse Hill
Along the way I spotted Skylarks (Alauda arvensis), Oystercatchers (Haematopus ostralegus), a Make & Female Wheatear (Oenanthe oenanthe), Herring Gulls (Larus argentatus) and the occasional Puffin.
You may see Dolphins and Grey seals around Garland Stone, though there were none to be seen on our visit.
We then took the path to the Old Farm, whichis very colourful at this time of the year with the flowering Red Campion (Silene diocia), before returning to North Haven to complete our circular tour of the island, and a final view of the Puffins and Guillemots.
